        Gem Price Guide

        Step 6: Appraising

        Lesson 3

This is a guide to gem values based upon qualitative evaluations of things like, cut clarity, and color. Those evaluations are inherently subjective, and therefore the values/prices derived from those evaluations?are also subjective. Each market participant perceives the cut, clarity, and color of a given gem differently. Realize that buyers and seller often disagree about the quality of a given gemstone, and the price or value of a gem is what one willing buyer and one willing seller can actually agree upon. These values are just a guide. Color descriptions are listed for many gems. If you need help understanding them, see What?Does the GIA Colored Gem Grading Code Mean. For a more detailed discussion,?see Evaluating Color – hue, tone, and saturation.

The values in our guide come?from a variety of sources including primary and secondary gemstone dealers, jewelers, miners, and wholesale suppliers of commonly traded gemstones. You should keep in mind that gems are sold outside these price ranges every day. Prices listed are retail in US dollars. Wholesale is generally?one third of retail. High-end gems are often marked up 30% or less, while low-priced more “commercial quality” gems are often marked up considerably more.

The price your gem will sell for is based upon several factors. Quality is one of the most important factors in valuing a gem. Subtle variations in quality can make a substantial difference in the price, especially of high-end gems. Unless you are familiar with all the subtle nuances of color, cut and clarity you will not be able to accurately judge the value of a gem even with this guide. ?You should consider getting an appraisal. Few people have the experience to do this accurately and that includes most jewelers. There are no laws or regulations regarding gem appraisals. Many people write appraisals that do not have the experience to arrive at an accurate value. Still others capitalize on the lack of regulation and purposely write appraisals at highly inflated values. Do not give much merit to an appraisal unless it is from a highly respected organization or a reputable gem dealer who knows market prices and deals in the gem material they are valuing.

        Pearls

Prices of pearls are based on several quality factors. The values provided in this guide are for round cultured pearls. Baroque pearls are about 25-35% the cost of round pearls.

Natural pearls are extremely rare, and largely limited to auction and collector’s markets. These can be worth 10 to 20 times an equivalent Akoya cultured pearl.
